FLAGS IN DESIGN.

Many times, when a country is hosting a worldwide event, they rely on the ‘typical’ images and ideas people relate to their culture to create advertisements. In the world of communication design, this makes sense. One must effectively show the relation to the country, as well as creating a clever design. It is a balance. Often, the colors of these advertisements revert back to the most basic cultural symbol, the flag. A beautifully done example of this, is the FIFA 2010 World Cup campaign.

I personally love the colors, and how they were used to create dimension and movement in the advertisements above. The logo on the first ad is crisp and clear, using variations on the flag's colors. I am however, especially fond of the one below that, because it is really able to integrate the colors into a clever design. The head is shaped realistically as both a silhouetted head as well as the outline of Africa. Both color and design are a clear reference to South Africa, while still being aesthetically pleasing.
