ETHNIC TYPEFACES SERIES: BLACKLETTER






Blackletter typefaces have been around since the early twelfth century. It was used throughout all of Western Europe up until the seventeenth century. They are based upon handwritten forms, characterized by their dense black texture and their decorative capital letters. 
Though these typefaces were used for a variety of important documents, Germany is famous for their use of the Blackletter type. It took a long time to catch on, but once they were hooked, the Germans used it well into the twentieth century. Since their use of Blackletter went well into the modern world, people greatly associate the bold type with German design. 
The Schwabacher typeface (a specific blackletter) dominated in Germany in the late 15th to early 16th centuries. In 1530 Schwabacher was replaced with another blackletterFraktur
